“There were wakes all over the neighbourhood,” says tour guide Roger Brunelle at 34 Beaulieu Street in Centerville. “A wreath, purple or black — go in and see a dead person. Thursday, the casket closes and all go to church. And the mother was the one who survived everybody.”

On one of Roger’s previous tours a visit was arranged with Sister Lucille Mercier, who once taught at École St-Louis. She resides here with other Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin: “There used to be forty of us, now there are five.” She and Roger together gave the Oath of Allegiance, using the Stars and Stripes, as did both each school day.

The two also talked about Quebec, represented by its fleur-delys flag. Sister Lucille in her book On American Soil, the story of her religious order’s U.S. contribution since 1891, states that “belief in Divine Providence was their unique treasure.” Quebec-born Catholics made the new parishes central to daily life: “Allegiance to their adopted country was important but more so was the need to bring up children of strong physical and moral character.”
