CHAPTER TWENTY

The presence of the mountains growing before them became more tangible by the hour as the faint rooftops of the buildings behind them faded under the morning sun.

“How long?” Ada said, snapping Luke from his mental refuge.

“Huh?”

“Before we’re there?”

He turned toward her. Deep creases rippled across his forehead.

“The mountains,” she said, her voice increasing in pitch toward the end.

“A day or so,” he said, mumbling as his stomach growled. He didn’t share his sister’s high spirits and every word she uttered was like a nail being hammered into his eardrum. He just craved silence, and food, but mostly silence. It was just one of those days.

“I bet we can get there tonight,” she said, chipper as ever.

“Doubt it,” he said, certain that it was virtually impossible.

“I bet we can,” she said and added a little extra spring to her step as she increased her speed and pulled ahead of him.

Luke wasn’t sure what exactly had happened during the night, but it was like someone had flipped a switch and he’d exchanged moods with his sister, him having inherited her sour glum from the day before.

He inhaled a breath of relief as she pulled away with the dog trailing closely behind her. He would take whatever momentary reprieve he could get, even if she would be back with a vengeance as soon a she’d bottled up enough words to tire him completely.

The towering mountains loomed in front of him. She could be right, they might reach them before nightfall, but the climb would have to wait until the morning. Climbing mountains wasn’t something to engage in in the dark, unless a broken ankle was what you were after, then there would be worse ways to go about it.
