Chapter 8

Zak dropped me off at the house and then headed back to Zimmerman Academy to check on the progress of the decryption program he’d left running. He said he’d probably bring the thumb drive home with him so he could continue to work on it later this evening, but he hoped the much more powerful hard drives the school owned would have made a significant amount of progress in narrowing things down while he was away.

I headed in through the side door, which led directly into the mudroom located off the kitchen. I was greeted there by Charlie, who launched immediately into the happy dog dance, and the smell of something wonderful cooking in the oven. I slipped off my shoes, which were muddy from our trek up the mountain, picked Charlie up and cuddled him against my chest, and continued into the kitchen, were Ellie and Alex were chatting while chopping veggies at the counter.

“What smells so good?” I asked as I walked in and got a full blast of the smell of something Italian coming from the oven.

“Lasagna,” Ellie answered. “I made sausage and seafood.”

“I love seafood lasagna. Did you include lobster with the crab and shrimp?”

“Of course. And scallops too.”

My stomach began grumbling loudly, so I went over to the counter to snag one of the carrots Alex had been chopping for the salad. I was ravenous and couldn’t wait for dinner to be served. “It smells and sounds wonderful. I’m starving and I’m sure the others will be as well.” I frowned. “I guess we forgot to eat lunch.”

“Dinner will be another hour, but I have homemade bread cooling on the rack. There’s plenty if you want to grab a piece to tide you over,” Ellie suggested.

I set Charlie on the floor, then padded across the room in my stocking feet. “I thought you weren’t going to overdo,” I said as I broke a large piece of bread from the loaf. “Making homemade bread seems like overdoing to me.”

“I didn’t overdo,” Ellie argued. “I was feeling better today and Alex helped a lot. We even managed to get Baby Eli’s room finished, which means he can make his appearance at any time and we’ll be ready.”

I smiled at Alex. I knew how much it meant to Ellie to be ready for the baby before his arrival. I’d felt sort of bad for not staying to help, but I really did want to find out who killed Charles Rossi and if and how it related to the treasure.

“I’m going to run upstairs, take a quick shower, and change, but then I’ll be back to help,” I told the pair.

“Zak isn’t with you?” Ellie looked toward the door.

“He went back to check on a program he’s running on the computer at the Academy, but he’ll be here in plenty of time for dinner.”

“And your friends?”

I paused and glanced at Ellie. “They should be here in about an hour. Are Levi and Scooter around?”

“In the game room, battling the forces of evil.
