The dinner table was set in the house. Lee said, âIâd have liked to serve it under the tree like the other times, but the air is chilly.â
âSo it is, Lee,â said Samuel.
The twins came in silently and stood shyly staring at their guest.
âItâs a long time since Iâve seen you, boys. But we named you well. Youâre Caleb, arenât you?â
âIâm Cal.â
âWell, Cal then.â And he turned to the other. âHave you found a way to rip the backbone out of your name?â
âSir?â
âAre you called Aaron?â
âYes, sir.â
Lee chuckled. âHe spells it with one a. The two aâs seem a little fancy to his friends.â
âIâve got thirty-five Belgian hares, sir,â Aron said. âWould you like to see them, sir? The hutch is up by the spring. Iâve got eight newbornsâjust born yesterday.â
âIâd like to see them, Aron.â His mouth twitched. âCal, donât tell me youâre a gardener?â
Leeâs head snapped around and he inspected Samuel. âDonât do that,â Lee said nervously.
Cal said, âNext year my father is going to let me have an acre in the flat.â
Aron said, âIâve got a buck rabbit weighs fifteen pounds. Iâm going to give it to my father for his birthday.â
They heard Adamâs bedroom door opening. âDonât tell him,â Aron said quickly. âItâs a secret.â
Lee sawed at the pot roast. âAlways you bring trouble for my mind, Mr. Hamilton,â he said. âSit down, boys.â
Adam came in, turning down his sleeves, and took his seat at the head of the table. âGood evening, boys,â he said, and they replied in unison, âGood evening, Father.â
And, âDonât you tell,â said Aron.
âI wonât,â Samuel assured him. âDonât tell what?â Adam asked. Samuel said, âCanât there be a privacy? I have a secret with your son.â
Cal broke in, âIâll tell you a secret too, right after dinner.â
âIâll like to hear it,â said Samuel. âAnd I do hope I donât know already what it is.â
Lee looked up from his carving and glared at Samuel. He began piling meat on the plates.
The boys ate quickly and quietly, wolfed their food. Aron said, âWill you excuse us, Father?â
Adam nodded, and the two boys went quickly out. Samuel looked after them. âThey seem older than eleven,â he said. âI seem to remember that at eleven my brood were howlers and screamers and runners in circles. These seem like grown men.â
âDo they?â Adam asked.
Lee said, âI think I see why that is. There is no woman in the house to put a value on babies. I donât think men care much for babies, and so it was never an advantage to these boys to be babies. There was nothing to gain by it. I donât know whether that is good or bad.â
Samuel wiped up the remains of gravy in his plate with a slice of bread. âAdam, I wonder whether you know what you have in Lee. A philosopher who can cook, or a cook who can think? He has taught me a great deal. You must have learned from him, Adam.â
Adam said, âIâm afraid I didnât listen enoughâor maybe he didnât talk.
