CHAPTER 12

ON MONDAY, AS SOON as Harry signed on to her email account, the alert caught her eye. It was in red text with an exclamation point next to it; settings she wouldn’t have known how to use if it weren’t for the time she had spent with Busy. But she put her relationship – or lack of it – out of her mind. She clicked on the email and started reading.

After a few lines, Harry’s eyes widened. She didn’t believe Millie really knew the identity of the killer she had been searching for, but she had to treat every lead as if it were her ticket to close the case. She picked up the phone to start calling witnesses, but put it back on its cradle as Garcia slammed down in the chair across from her.

“You’re back.”

Garcia looked up at her with such a passionate look of contempt, Harry wished she hadn’t said anything at all. She looked back at the monitor, then glanced up at Garcia over it. The rookie was scowling furiously at her desk blotter and muttering something to herself. Harry turned her attention back to the screen, then put her hand on her phone.

“I guess the case has gone on well without me,” Garcia spat.

Harry didn’t meet her eyes. “Actually, I really haven’t gotten anywhere. I was just about to start talking to witnesses again. I’m thinking this time I can meet up to speak with them in person.”

Garcia’s scowl didn’t drop off, but deepened, and she stood up from the desk. “I suppose you have gone over the case files again first before you go half-cocked talking to witnesses.”

“I have. I’ve gone over it so many times, I feel like I could recite it.” It was true, and the lack of a spark of intuition when she read over the files made Harry slightly sick to her stomach. “I’m hoping that with this newest development -”

“What development?” Garcia asked. She stalked around her desk to tower over Harry in her desk chair. But she didn’t wait for Harry to answer; instead, she grabbed Harry’s mouse, moved to the browser window, and scrolled back to the top of the blog. “This isn’t the case moving on without me?”

“No,” Harry started, but the contempt rolling off Garcia’s body stilled her mouth.

“Are you trying to push me off this case? You know I couldn’t help that my grandmother chose this time to die and leave her family destitute.”

Harry didn’t argue the point of the Garcia family’s relative wealth compared to the rest of the community. She pulled in a breath and held it.

“Stop doing that weird breathing thing and answer me.”

Another beat of holding her breath helped, and Harry let it out slowly. She reminded herself that her partner was in a delicate position – she had lost someone she loved, and she was lashing out in pain, trying to find a hold on the world again.

“This is the only thing that has happened since you have been out,” she said.
