Chapter 11

Maurice

The carriage lurched as the Pegasi heaved their broad, beautiful wings. Although impressive, the mystical creatures weren’t what held Maurice’s attention.

His gaze was on the swirling planets below, namely their destination of Callan. The beautiful blue ball that held his target, offered up on a silver platter.

With not one, but two Origin Game Masters with him, he wouldn’t fail. Fiona, too, would stay in line now that she had no choice.

And if not, the Origin Game Masters would see for themselves what an Enforcer was capable of. They probably would enjoy the spectacle of a Game Master execution.

But only if she crossed a line, and when she did, Maurice would be ready.

They entered into the Endgame World’s atmosphere and a barrier zipped over his skin, sparking with energy as they seamlessly transitioned into a new zone without the standard loading period. That was a benefit of the Pegasi, the mystical beasts acting as an accelerated code reader that transferred their avatars from one world to the next without the need for a gate.

Jason clicked his tongue as he yanked one hand, pulling on the invisible reins through his HUD that controlled the beasts. A neigh sounded as they redirected toward a mountain range. Callan’s castle came into view, but they were heading due south, toward a thicker region of mist that cascaded over an island clinging to the cliffs.

Right, Laurence has pinpointed the location of the seven glitched items to the Resting Camp. Perhaps that’s where he’d find User 0125.

Soon, Maurice thought. Soon I’ll finally be able to wipe that troublesome Warrior off the entire system.

He turned to see Fiona staring at him and he flashed her a wide grin. The Elemental Mage pursed her lips and looked away. Despite her impressive show of restraint, he thought she looked a little rattled. Surely, she didn’t still hold Julian’s execution against him. Or perhaps she knew she only had one chance. If she followed the rules, she had nothing to worry about.

Jason stiffened, catching Maurice’s attention. Callan’s Origin Game Master leaned forward and frowned at a speckling of holes in the cliff wall. “That’s new.”

“Did a monster do that?” Isis wondered. “I’ve never followed your monster plans too closely, but perhaps I should have,” Isis added, also peering over the side of her carriage.

Some of the holes seemed too close together as the entire mountain rumbled, sending a slab crumbling into bits. Slabs of rock broke off and crashed into the cavern below.

“The worms are capable of tunneling,” Jason remarked, although his frown said he hadn’t programmed them to behave this way. “Either way, the glitch’s signature didn’t come from the Vampire Den.”

“A pity,” Isis said, leaning back.

A shadow passed above them, followed by an earsplitting screech as the Pegasi whinnied. Jason leaned out of the carriage and looked up, and his scowl deepened. “That, on the other hand, may require our immediate attention.”

Maurice shifted his helmet to his lap and leaned out to find the huge underbelly of a Callan Falcon as the creature soared overhead.
