“The guy has a crush on you,” Toby said after I’d finished telling him more details, both of us leaning against the counter in the break room, his arms stretched out to either side so he could spread out his wings, which got stiff from being held against his body while he typed.

“Maybe,” I said, because it made me feel good that someone would have a crush on me. “I can deal with it, though.”

“There’s no ‘maybe.’ He asked you twice about your boyfriend and the minute he found out you were single, he wanted to hook up.” The bat shook his head. “But you’re not interested in him?”

I shook my head. “I mean…potentially, but it would have to be way down the road when he gets more confidence in himself and learns to listen to other people. He’s told me all these stories about himself but he hasn’t asked me anything about me.”

“He still sounds like a forty,” Toby said, “but if you wanted to sleep with him, that can bring him down five or even ten points. If you’re getting laid then you can put up with more.”

“Hah,” I said. “Is that why you hang out with me still?”

“You’re chill. I’d hang out with you even if we didn’t hook up once in a while.”

I grinned. “But it’s easier knowing that we can.”

“For sure.” He lifted one arm to ruffle between my ears. “Look, don’t worry about this guy. You’re still figuring out where you’re going to be in relation to each other, and you take your time with stuff like that.”

I splayed my ears. “Meaning that everyone should, or that I specifically do?”

The fruit bat raised both thin arms above his head, pulling his wings taut below them. “After we recognized each other here, we went on two dates, and then,” he lowered his voice, glancing toward the door. “We didn’t talk for three weeks, then you wanted to go on a date again.”

“And you said no.”

“You were being like a thirty-five at the time, okay?”

I stopped as a mule deer who worked down the hall from me came in, glanced at the two of us, then filled her coffee mug and asked if we’d seen the latest Runway Wars, which Toby had and I hadn’t, but I wasn’t following this season so I didn’t mind hearing about it.

When she’d left, Toby said, “I gotta get back to work too, but you know that’s not necessarily a bad thing, right? Taking your time?”

“I guess not.”

“It’s good. You’re a data guy, you want to get all the info and get it right. That’s fine.”

“Oh god,” I groaned. “And you’re a coder, you code by the seat of your pants, I know.”

He exaggerated a pained expression, ears back. “I just want to know how to do a thing. If I have a piece of code that already does most of what I need, I’ll grab it and make a couple tweaks. I’m not gonna rebuild the whole thing from scratch.
