Chapter 33

Let’s just say the entire weekend sucks. I stay in my room the entire time and the rain pounds down the entire time. I don’t see anyone except my sister and my mother. Let me tell you, there are prettier people to be looking at all weekend. I don’t see Ella at all, and I don’t know if I can actually survive until Monday when I will see her again. The other odd thing is that I do not see hide nor hair of Roger either – not that I want to. Dee doesn’t say anything else the entire weekend about him, and I don’t ask. I think she’s hiding something. It’s that twin thing again.

When Monday does arrive and I’m sitting at school eating breakfast, I’m a little surprised by two unexpected developments. Kris sits down beside me. “Dude, I told you I’d come through,” he says. I take a quick glance under the table and watch him open his hand to reveal a huge wad of cash, much bigger than the one he gave me before. He says, “If you got some more shit, I can sell it too.”

I remember the arrangement. “I’ll have my mom refill my prescription,” I say. “After seeing some of the cool kids in action at the party, I think I like adding to their idiocy and I get the added bonus that it does line my own pocket.”

“Pleasure doing business with you.” He slaps the money in my hand and leaves happily. Despite my appearance at the cool party, I am still alone. Not even Lou is here, which is the second surprise. Lou never misses school because, despite the fact that he looks like a mass murderer, he does like being here; at least that’s what he’s told me. He has a couple of teachers that don’t limit his creativity no matter how weird it gets. One of them is my English teacher, Ms. Mack. The more I learn about her, the more I like her. She’s one of those quietly influential teachers, not one of those who try to be your friends, but one that actually helps students. In my own experience, the buddy teacher winds up getting taken advantage of, and the kids think they’re ridiculous anyway. But what do I know; I’m crazy.

Ella appears at my side and sits beside me.

I can’t contain myself. “What are we going to do?” I say.

She looks at me briefly and then glances down. “About what?” she says.

“You know…”

“What’s going on with your sister?” she says and points.

I look up and see the cool kids at their lockers where they always are. I also see Dee and Roger sitting at a table engaged in a heated discussion. Dee is angry because every time Roger leans toward her, she leans away. I don’t like the looks of this. I don’t realize I’m staring until I catch Jerret’s eyes. Quickly, I look away but not before I see him point and laugh. When I glance up again, he’s walking in my direction.
