We make our way to the fanciest, private hospital wingâone of the many perks of being a motorsports star. When we reach the last room, Taran walks out. He seems perplexed to see me, but after hesitating, he nods. âHeâs sleeping. Iâll let you, umâ¦â There isnât much to say, but I understand him. When he moves out of the way, I slowly walk into the darkened room.
My heart nearly pulls me down to the floor at the sightâRobesy appears to be in one piece. I expected him to be on life support, or missing a limb, so fortunately, I was wrong. Thereâs a cannula in his nose, and all the beeping around him seems stable. His eyes are closed, and I observe the slow rise and fall of his chest.
Heâs alive, thank God and all the stars.
When I get to his side, I put my hand next to his. I link our index fingers, just like when we were kids, in an effort to jog some fond memories. If I can recall the good times we had, maybe heâll get better. Or maybe this part is for me.
My eyes burn as I close my eyes, wishing we could swap places. I deserve the pain, not him. I was the worst friend ever, and Robesy has always been amazing, so he has to be okay. Please, Godâ¦
âDaisuke?â he asks. My eyes jolt open, and I see him already looking at me. His voice sounds hoarse, and he looks exhausted, but heâs alive. Right now Iâm thankful for everyone in this hospital and also, the universe, for keeping my best friend okay. âWhatâ¦what are you doing here?â
A million thoughts buzz through my heart. I open my mouth, but Iâm silent for a moment. Then, it all comes tumbling out; I bend forward, and sob. The anxiousness and adrenaline of the past six hours finally catch up to me. Leaning my head on his hand, I take in the warmth of his skin as I cry and cry.
âAwâ¦there there?â He pats my hand, and I look up. Even through my tears, itâs obvious Robesy is surprised and uncomfortable with my emotions. Waterworks arenât embarrassing when your best friend, the one you love more than anyone, has survived a major car wreck. âUhâ¦itâll be okay?â He cringes and looks around, but no one else is in the room.
I sniff and wipe my face and nose. âIâ¦I thought you were dead.â
âMoi aussi.â The motherfucker has the audacity to laugh.
âAre you okay?â
âThe CT-scan is clear, but Iâm kind of sore. They want to keep me for observation, checking my brain and shit.â He coughs and I move in closer, afraid heâll fade to dust. âThey wonât give me any stronger pain pills, those fuckers.â
We both laugh, and I inch forward. âRobesyâ¦I thought you were a goner.â
His face flickers with an emotion I donât recognize before he schools it. âYou want to keep beating me in races fair and square.â He smirks. âI get it.â
âIâm serious.â My eyes are still teary as I get closer to his face.
