ERYKAH BADU
(1971— ), Musician
When Baduizm dropped in 1997, it caused a sensation, selling nearly 3 million copies, winning two Grammys, and cementing Erykah Badu as the Queen of Neo-Soul. “I thought I was ahead of my time. There was nothing like what I was doing—and they agreed, the music business.”
Badu was born Erica White in Dallas. She was raised mostly by her mother, Kolleen Wright, her godmother, and two grandmothers: five mothers “if you count Mother Nature.” She started acting and dancing as a little girl and enrolled in Booker T. Washington performing-arts school for high school. She changed her name to Erykah Badu, kah being Kemetic (Egyptian) for a human’s vital energy or “inner-self” and Ba-du after her favorite jazz scat-sound.
During college Badu collaborated with her cousin, a music production student, who sent her beats to rap over, one of which inspired her to sing, and their sound was born. Opportunity knocked in the form of a tour opening for D’Angelo, and Badu took her place in the budding neo-soul scene.
Badu considers herself a touring artist and has been on the road much of the past twenty years. She has three children and considers herself “a mother first.” She is a reiki master, a holistic health practitioner, and a doula who incorporates spirituality into her work using tuning forks, crystal singing bowls, and gemstones, hoping to cultivate healing energy through music. Her non-profit B.L.I.N.D. (Beautiful Love Incorporated Nonprofit Development) supports music, dance, theater, and visual arts in under- privileged communities.
Quoting lyrics from her 2008 single “Master Teacher,” Badu started the hashtag #staywoke, which became aligned with the Black Lives Matter movement in 2014.
Cheers to you, Badu!
