Chapter Eleven
âWhat time do you think it is?â asked Nickie from where she lay on a smooth rock just beside the rock pool. She had her bikini back on and her arm resting on her forehead to ward off the sun.
âCanât be later than lunchtime.â
Kate had her panties back on but was topless as she lay on her stomach, absorbing the heat of the stones. It didnât feel later than lunchtime; it felt like almost no time had passed since they first got into the pool. Blissful, timeless moments Nickie wished she could remember forever.
âShould we head back?â A loud grumble emanated from Nickieâs stomach. It had been much too long since she had eaten and the bag with the snacks was still lying in the back of Kateâs car.
âI can hear your stomach from here, Nik.â Kate sat up and laughed. She looked even more beautiful with the sun brightening her already-tanned features.
âIâm starving.â
âMe too, and we still have the walk back. Any chance you can organize a helicopter to airlift us out of here?â Kate was joking, although she looked desperate enough to hope for something, anything that would mean they could avoid the hike back.
âIâm sure your connections are much more capable than mine of organizing such impossible feats.â
The hike to the parking lot happened in between silent bursts of energy mixed with fatigue. When Nickie finally spotted the Jeep, she laughed with relief. âWe are nearly there.â
âRemind me never to listen to you again when you suggest a hike.â Kate stomped past her, beads of sweat had formed on her forehead and thick clumps of dust clung to her calves.
âOh, come on. It wasnât that bad.â
âMaybe not for you but my personal trainer will have to do major changes to my program when I get back to the city.â
When they reached the car, Kate found a bottle of water and threw splashes of it on her face before passing it to Nickie. âHere, have the rest. You look like youâre burning up.â
âDo I?â
Nickie took the bottle, although she didnât feel that hot or even that thirsty. She felt much better now that they were about to be on their way home. The thought of a fruit salad or a smoothie or maybe even a cold pasta sent her stomach rumbling like a hungry lion.
âYour face is as red as a tomato and so are your chest and arms.â
Nickie looked down at her arms and when she saw how red and inflamed they were, her stomach sank.
âIâm sunburnt.â
Being sunburnt for Nickie was far worse than it was for most people, it meant that she would have to stay out of the sun for at least a day until her burn subsided. And it meant that she would surely peel in a few days when the dead skin gave up its hold.
Kateâs eyes widened as realization of the seriousness dawned on her. âOh no, princess.â She stretched out her hand, as though by some magic touch, she could take away the burn.
