Max heard all Caro's plans and nodded appropriately, while his mind churned on her last words, âEven though I don't and can't live here, I can visit. I will visit.â
He wasn't sure why it bothered him so much that she was treating âthemâ in such a cavalier way. Itâs not like he didnât know her company and life were in California.
Fool, it's because sheâs something you're not and it completely intrigues you. You moved beyond mere interest in her when you kissed her.
Caro had created a chink in his armor. And though she'd returned his kisses with a passion that had given him a sense that she was falling for him as he was for her, apparently that wasn't the case.
Can't you just enjoy the time with her and not make a big deal out of it?
âMax?â
He focused back on her. âWhat?â
âYou were on another planet.â
âYeah, that happens sometimes when a thought comes up about a case.â
Disappointment flickered in her eyes and he instantly hated himself. What a chicken he was turning into.
âI understand. Anyway, Debra picked a gorgeous gray and brown Berber for the carpets and I think we should keep it. It's perfect.â
âGo for it.â His phone buzzed and he realized it was time to head back to the old office and meet with an estate client.
âI've got an appointment in a bit. Listen, do you want to have dinner tonight?â
He braved her intense look.
âAre you sure you want to? You don't need to,â she said, her voice hesitant.
âOh, yes I do.â Damn, that wasn't supposed to slip out. But it was worth it to see her gray eyes light up.
âThen yes. I'll text you when I leave here. Then give me forty-five minutes to clean off the dust.â
âOkay if I grill steaks?â
âIn this weather?â
âI grill in any weather.â
âThen you're on. I love a great steak.â
âThen I'm your man.â Damn, he did it again. âOh, and Mom extends her invite for Wednesday pasta night to the whole Young clan.â
âWow, that's nice of her. I'm sure Mom and Dad will love meeting her. Have Brice and Jen met her?â
âMany times. Have you heard from them?â
âYeah, they're back and at work. Didn't even have time to chat much, but we'll catch up at your mom's place.â
âGreat. Gotta run.â He got up and began to stuff the remnants of their lunch back into the sacks.
âDon't worry, I'll clean up.â Caro looked at him uncertainly, checked the staircase, and back at him. âGot a second for a goodbye kiss to hold me over until dinner?â
An amazing relief flooded through him. Remember, enjoy the moments.
In answer, he pulled her close and captured her lips, drawing out the kiss as long as he could.
âBy the way, did you dream of me last night?â he asked when he came up for air.
âWhat do you think?â
