Chapter Twelve

Mariah’s Place never changed. Though he and Josee had gotten out of a cab in seven p.m. summer sunshine, they entered a world of air-conditioned twilight. A jazz combo already played on the small stage keeping the music low enough for conversation. The volume would increase as the night progressed. Most of the four tops with their bent wood chairs were occupied with tourists trying to get shots of the place that would turn out too dark to use. Singles sat at the bar hoping to hook up with other singles of either sex. Couples on the small checkerboard dance floor swayed against each other rather than showing off their best moves. That also came later when the liquor kicked in. Although the atmosphere ran heavy with the scent of bourbon and beer, no smoke filled the air. Mariah, who had lost much of her vocal range to cigarettes and had to huff oxygen before a brief nightly performance, banned smoking long before the city did.

A long arm waved to them from a dark corner as if encouraging Trin to throw him a pass. X had snagged a table early. Evidently, he and his date had eaten bar food for dinner since a half and half tray of chicken wings and stuffed potato skins still occupied a central place on its top. “We saved some for you.”

“Thanks, we ate Junior’s lasagna for dinner. Like lions after a kill, we won’t need to eat again for days.” Trinity pulled out a chair for Josee and tucked her into place.

X’s date, very black with a head full of cornrows cascading in a multitude of tiny braids studded with beads around her broad and beautiful face, said, “Now that’s a gentleman.”

“Baby, I didn’t want to insult your independence as a woman. This is my bro, Trinity, and his friend, Josee. Meet Caressa.”

Caressa’s carefully plucked eyebrows rose. “I know who you are—celebrities. I do read People just like everyone else. Guess I’m the only one at this table not famous.”

“For now. Wait until you hear her sing. We got a duet planned for later. Let me stand a round of drinks to get this party started.” X stood and mimed a waiter taking an order. “Miss Josee?”

“Sauvignon blanc for me if they’ve got it.”

“I’ll take whatever beer Mariah has on draft. The next is on me.” That settled, Trin picked up a potato skin stuffed with cheese, bacon, and topped with sour cream, nervous eating. Any time now, the band might play a real slow dance. He’d stand as tall as he could, lead Josee out onto the floor, and resist the urge to rest his head on her chest.

X returned with the white wine in its stemmed goblet and an iced mug of foaming beer. “Thought you weren’t hungry, my man.”

“Mariah’s knows how to stuff a skin. I couldn’t resist.”

Caressa chuckled, low and throaty. “That sounds almost obscene.”

“Sorry, wasn’t meant to be.” Trin chugged some of his drink, while Josee with a coy smile on her lips, sipped her wine and left the high calorie snacks alone.
