Your baby’s almost ready to shade. When drawing the scales, you can still use lines to create a crisscross grid pattern, but then draw out each scale separately, tracing over your gridline. This will give you nice rounded, individual scales that follow a consistent pattern.

Begin shading. Because you want to make this little lady look soft and cute (for a dragon, anyway!), try using a blending stump a bit at this first step, to keep the tone smooth.

Aw, see how cute she is? Your baby dragon’s ready to explore the world of, er, paper I guess! Continue to use the blending stump until she’s complete, so that she has a soft appearance and virtually no pencil lines are visible.
