Because so much of the skeleton is hidden, it may be difficult to differentiate between muscle and bone. However, listed below are the bones that are visible on most bodies of average build. There may be some people with more developed areas of fatty deposit that disguise the less obvious ones, but usually the following bones can be seen:

• Clavicle

• Sternum

• Parts of the scapula

• Seven cervical vertebrae

• First and twelfth thoracic vertebrae, in certain positions

• First and twelfth ribs

• Pubis

• Iliac crest

• Iliac tuberosity

• Anterior superior iliac spine
