STEP 2: Structure the Eye and Lay In Initial Value Layers

Firm up the eye structure with layers of 4H and 2H pencil. Do just enough to make the eye identifiable as an eye.

Build the first layer of value with crosshatching and a 4H pencil. Keep your pencil lines about 1⁄2"(1.3cm) apart. The background will be pure white, so stay within the contour lines of the bird. Start the second layer of value on the bird’s head using a 2H pencil.

STEP 3: Build Value On the Lower Body

Move down to the lower portion of the bird’s body and tail feathers and continue building value with a 4H pencil followed by a 2H pencil. This portion of the bird’s body is almost pure black—use that dark value to judge the other parts of the bird as the drawing progresses.

With a very sharp HB pencil, begin building the third layer of value, pushing back the darkness of the bird’s lower body and the back tail feather. As you build up this layer, work around the shafts of the tail feathers (the light strip in the center of each feather) to retain their lighter values.
