Keep your pencil lines light when making your initial sketches because it usually takes a few attempts to measure accurately.

Practise applying paint in different strengths on scrap paper to learn how to build up colour.

Take regular breaks when painting. Go outside if you can, to give your eyes a rest from staring at the easel.

DOGS

Dogs obviously vary much more so than cats in breed and type, but they too are beautiful creatures that are fantastically loyal. Like most pets they offer an unconditional love and every time they greet you they express this love with great enthusiasm. You are never left in any doubt as to how your relationship stands at any one time. A dog is man’s best friend – never a truer word spoken.

I love the variety found in dogs, whether small or large. I have drawn and painted many breeds and to see the form of a dog appear on paper or canvas is always a joy. I grew up with dogs as pets as a child, as my parents owned an Irish wolfhound and a Jack Russell.

GEORGE

George is a lovely strong-looking golden retriever. The pose is so typical of the gentle character of the breed and it was this that I tried to capture while making this painting of George. I worked wet-on-dry, overlaying transparent washes of Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna and Cadmium Orange.
