Chapter 13

When he once struck his head falling down a flight of stairs in the castle, Ulrin’s mother had been adamant that he shouldn’t sleep with a concussion. Despite how tired he was, she had made him stay awake, repeating minor pieces of trivia until she was certain the danger had passed. The experience had left an impression on the young Ulrin, and he had always kept this factoid about head injuries in the back of his mind.

So, when he woke up shortly after his fall, he was quite startled, to say the least. He was quite upset that he had allowed himself to pass out like that. As if this world didn’t present enough dangers to those who slept in unsecured places, to fall asleep after hitting his head was foolish. Not that he really could have helped it. His body had just given out.

He had no idea whether he had been out for just a few minutes or if it had been considerably longer. However long it was, it wasn’t enough for the injuries he had sustained to cease their aching. Speaking of which, it was about time he checked just how bad they were. Another reason it had been foolish passing out like that. Leaving those injuries untreated for so long might lead to them being far worse than they could have been.

There was a torch sconce on a nearby wall, and Ulrin lit it after making sure he was far enough from the door and any windows to keep the light from being seen outside. In the light of the torch, he began to examine his body. As he had thought, his ankle had been twisted; though fortunately, it did not seem to be broken. His knee and lower leg were badly scraped up, and it hurt to bend, but everything seemed to still be in the right place. His shoulder was badly bruised and made an unpleasant popping noise when he lifted his arm above his head. That was troubling, but again, nothing seemed to be completely broken.

Examining his head injury was going to be more difficult. He’d have to find some kind of mirror. Time to look around.

Raising the torch on his uninjured side, he took in the room he now found himself in. It was an oval chamber with a spiraling staircase around the outside, with rows of instruments, bookshelves, and desks spread out across the various landings along the stairway. The staircase eventually led up to a platform where a massive cylinder jutted out of the arched ceiling.

The Observatory. Once the heart of the Kingdom of Lorn’s efforts to study the stars and the places far beyond.

Fortunately, it wasn’t too hard to find a reflective surface among the piles of instruments laid out on a table nearby. He got a look at himself and was shocked. It appeared he was in rougher shape than he had thought. At some point during the fall or the impact, he must have bitten his tongue as dried blood ran down his mouth and chin.
