For a really stark example of a complementary scene, look up night photos of Icelandic or Hawaiian volcanoes or magma fields. Many photographs provide a good contrast between the red magma and cooler hues, like purple or blue.

Coloring Tip 3: The Mirror Technique

Mirroring your painting every 15 minutes or so while painting is a good way to ensure the piece looks correct from all angles. It’s easy for our brains to adjust themselves to one angle and cause us to miss obvious mistakes. Almost all programs allow you to flip your canvas horizontally, which will give you a mirror view. In Photoshop, select from the menu Image > Image Rotation > Flip Canvas Horizontally/Vertically.
