LEVIATHAN

1 Concept and Design Stage

When designing an animal as big as a leviathan, it is important to understand its environment. Many animals live in the leviathan’s environment, but in this case I conceived an animal that is the environment. Like a living island or coral reef, a whole ecology developed around the creature.

My initial idea was to portray the leviathan as a prehistoric whale with characteristics of a plesiosaur dinosaur, such as its four large flippers. My goal was to create a beast that had been living for thousands of years. Living in the deepest ocean depths and surfacing rarely helped form a whole ecosystem around the beast similar to how remora fish survive in close proximity to sharks.
