The very idea of her being so scared had been shocking. Yes, she’d just had a nasty fright by being abused by those gang members, but he had been the one holding onto her then and she had seemed just as terrified. Of him?

Tom couldn’t understand it.

He’d known since he’d first met Laura that she had barriers up in her personal life and it had been a good thing for him because it meant that she was safe to work with. To be a friend, even, and it had been such a pleasure to be able to help her—and Harry. To finally able to be close enough to someone to feel connected and involved had added something to his life that he knew was important. Ever since Laura had brought Harry into the emergency department that day, Tom had known he was being pulled back into an engagement with life that was on a different—and more meaningful—level than the way he’d been living for the last few years.

It was bewildering to think that Laura could be afraid of him in any way.

Disturbing.

Unacceptable.

He needed to find out what was going on here. And to reassure Laura that she could trust him.
