Chapter 11

They had slept and played the day away.

Jean drove home feeling melancholy. He didn’t want to leave.

Now he understood why Clyde wanted to live with Harry. Harry

was the core that held the three of them together. He and Clyde

were the moths flapping around the fire, trying not to get burned

by Harry’s flame.

Logic explained why Harry was the more desirable of the two

brothers. He was the least attainable. It was the law of animal

attraction. The chase. The hunt that kept interest.

Harry’s aloofness to Clyde’s steady openness. Yin and yang.

Jean stopped at the grocery store on the way home. As he

shopped, pushing a cart, he wondered if he looked different. He

was no longer ordinary. He had tasted a society taboo. As if

being gay wasn’t enough to be held up for ridicule, now Jean had

succumbed to the desires of two men, brothers, and sexual

partners.

Home again, lugging his grocery bags to the condo door, Jean

placed his key in the lock and disarmed the alarm, carrying his

food to the kitchen counter. The light was flashing on his

answering machine. He had his cell phone with him, but it

wasn’t turned on. When he leaned over the machine he read five

messages were left. He hit play and began to unload his

groceries.

“Hi, Jean, it’s Patti. Just calling to see if you want to go for a

hike. If not, I’ll see you tomorrow at school.”

Jean checked the clock. No time for a hike now. He tossed

the salad vegetables in the crisper as message number two

played.

In French his mother said, “Shzene, pick up.” A pause, then

the line disconnected. All his family used a soft ‘j’ sound to

pronounce his name. The next two were calls with no messages,

just hang ups, which indicated to Jean his mother had tried three

times. The last one was a voice that made his skin quiver.

“Hey, Frenchie. Clyde wants me to call and say thanks for a

great weekend. He’d do it himself but his mouth is still occupied.

If you know what I mean.” In the background Jean heard Clyde

shout, “It is not!” Jean laughed at the prank. “Anyway, hot

thang, come by the shop soon.”

Smiling to himself, Jean finished putting away the dry goods,

folding his canvas bags together and into a cupboard. He stood

over the answering machine and deleted the messages, then

called his mother, checking the time since it was three hours later

in Quebec.

“Bonjour, Shzene.”

In French, Jean spoke to her, “What’s up, Mom?”

“Can’t a mother call to say hello?”

“So nothing urgent?” Jean sat on his sofa, shrugging off his

jacket and then removing his shoes.

“Your father wants you to come home for Christmas. Stay for

a while.”

“Okay. I think I can.” Jean glanced at a wall calendar. It was

only the middle of October so he had time to plan.

“Will you bring someone special?”

The thought of showing up with his new beefcake boyfriends

amused Jean. “I doubt it.”

“Why not? How can you go so long without?”

“Mom…” Jean knew she didn’t want to hear about a new

man, and as a matter of fact, she would love to hear about a new

woman. “Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.
