Chapter 10
Gio’s phone had three messages from Kevin, each one angrier than the last. Surprised he didn’t track my GPS. A voice mail from Kyrie was next. Gio called him back.
“Hey!” Kyrie answered. “The big dogs sicced me on ya, now. What’s up, dude? Trying to get fired?”
“I wish. Pretty sure that isn’t an option.”
“Not without a price tag. I don’t know about your contract, but even if this was the worst gig in the world, I wouldn’t be able to pull together the cash to get out of it.”
Gio harrumphed.
“Course I’m a starving college student slash starving actor. You may be in a better position to buy your freedom. Incidentally, I don’t think this is all that bad.”
“Are you being taped right now?”
“Maybe…How about a drink—we meet up for a few?”
Gio sighed. He’d known he needed to get some tape time in today, especially after the Houdini act. And Kyrie was actually a cool kid, even fun to hang out with.
I’m just sick of the lies.
“I gotta finish our recording set. Feel free to tell Kevin I’m on my way back.”
Kyrie chuckled. “Will do. And I’d love to come watch you record. Thanks for inviting me!”
“Definitely being recorded.” Gio crossed over a train track and winced when every muscle in his body ached dully. Only gonna get worse.
“How about that Thai place on Marlborough, afterward. Sweet Pepper?”
Gio faltered. What the hell kinda term of endearment is sweet pepper? Then realization hit him. “Oh! Got it. The restaurant. Hey, there was something I wanted to ask you…”
“Shoot.” Silence followed as Kyrie waited and Gio racked his poor, overtaxed brain. Some a-hole laid on his horn when Gio snuck under a barely red light.
“Umm…oh yeah! You said Greg’s a lawyer, right?”
“Yup.” Kyrie sounded like he was eating something crunchy. Spoiling his meal in a few hours. Something crinkled over the line.
“Think he’d mind meeting us? I’ll buy dinner if he can answer a few questions for me. Still be way cheaper than calling my lawyer.” Who never gets back to me anyway. Seriously, how is that the best money can buy? Maybe for the price of Pad Thai and lemongrass soup he could get a little legal advice.
“Greg? Don’t think he likes you much. Did you do something to piss him off after the play?”
Only fake-date you. “Nope. Not that I know of. Maybe you can put in a good word for me.” Gio swung through a drive-thru.
“Please pull up to the next speaker,” said a tinny female voice.
“I would if the guy in front of me would move,” Gio grumbled.
“You would what? What guy?” Kyrie took another crunchy bite over the phone.
“Never mind. Invite him, okay?”
“I’ll call him, but you better be nice!”
Gio considered protesting. He was always nice, wasn’t he? Nicer than not, anyway.
“Thank you for stopping at McDonalds. How can I help you?” The tin woman spoke again, like they hadn’t just talked a moment ago at the first microphone.
“I’ll see you in a few,” Gio said into his phone before signing off.
