Five minutes later, I’ve finished my drink and I’m feeling a bit dizzy. I haven’t eaten since breakfast, and I worked through my break earlier to earn some overtime. Eric buys me another Coke. This time, I ask for full fat. Maybe a kick of sugar will help, but ten minutes later when I finish the drink, I feel worse.

I excuse myself and go to the toilet where I sip some water from the tap and splash my face. My legs wobble and I have to reach out to steady myself. Why do I feel so off-kilter? Why is the room spinning? I need to eat something, but my stomach is rolling and heaving. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this before, even when I had the flu.

When I stumble back to the table, there’s another drink waiting for me. ‘I’m sorry, Eric, but I’m not feeling too well. I’m going to head out. Thanks for the drinks.’

He stands up. ‘Let me drop you off.’

‘No, thanks. I’d rather walk.’ And, in all honesty, I don’t want to be around him any longer.

‘Don’t be silly,’ he says. ‘Here. Sit down. Have another drink.’ He pushes the glass across the table towards me, and that’s when the penny drops.

He’s been spiking my drinks.

I’m drunk and it’s taken me this long to figure it out because I’ve never been drunk before, so I have no idea what it feels like. I don’t know what type of alcohol he’s used but it must be strong, or maybe I feel like this because my body isn’t used to the effects. Dizziness and nausea are prominent, and my mind feels numb, fuzzy, like I’m not in control of my own actions. People do this to themselves on purpose?

‘You’ve put something in my drink,’ I say slowly.

Eric sighs. ‘Just vodka. I thought it might help relax you.’

‘You’ve drugged me!’ I shout, reaching for the back of a chair to steady myself, but I miss and stumble against the side of the table. The people on the table in the corner look up, but don’t say anything.

‘Shh! Keep your voice down. It’s not like that. I wasn’t going to take advantage of you or anything. I’m not like that. I just wanted you to relax and have a bit of fun, that’s all.’

‘I’m underage! It’s illegal.’

‘So? You’ve run away from home at seventeen. I’m betting that’s illegal too, not to mention your fake ID. I thought a little vodka in your drink wouldn’t matter that much to you in the grand scheme of things.’

I roll my eyes, but the action makes my dizziness worse. ‘I have to go. Don’t talk to me ever again. Vera was right about you.’ I grab my jacket and head for the door. I manage to get outside before he joins me.

‘Let me drive you home.’

‘Go away!’ I almost scream.

‘Fine. Walk. I don’t care.’

Eric turns and storms away, muttering something about me being a bitch. It’s dark now and it’s started to rain.
