CHAPTER NINETEEN

A PERFECT MOMENT

IN AN IMPERFECT WORLD

Birmingham was a good place to be an FBI agent and to raise a family. My career prospered. My family prospered. Our first daughter, Laura Kathryn, was born nearly nine months to the day after I returned home from two weeks on a bridge in Atlanta. I was buzzed with anticipation as I drove Pat to St. Vincent’s Hospital on February 20, 1982. I had never been in the delivery room before. I remember exactly what transpired between Pat and me, she in the throes of contractions, me behind the wheel, as we raced to the hospital:

Me: “Damn, what a show this will be. I can’t wait!”

Pat: “Shut up!!”

At the hospital, after the numbing effects of an epidural injection began to take over, Pat relaxed a little. We were both kind of giddy with excitement. We partied, full of cheer and happiness as the nurses periodically measured Pat’s contractions. Then a nurse calmly walked into the room, checked Pat, and sprang into action. The baby was finally arriving.

Pat was wheeled into the delivery room. One of the nurses tossed me a gown and hat and told me to get a move on. I was so nervous I couldn’t get the cap and gown to work. I plunged into the delivery room, and when Pat saw my hat, which made me look like Sally Fields as the Flying Nun, she burst out laughing. The delivery staff also found me quite an amusing sight.

Then everyone got down to business.

Laura Kathryn Owens was born—without incident, as we say in law enforcement—at precisely 5:55 p.m. that day. One of the splendid perfect days of my life.
