Beyond Stress and Sadness

It’s normal to feel stress. There are many different kinds of stress we experience over the course of a single day (or even over the course of hours or minutes). We can feel good stress, like when we’re working out or finishing a huge project. We can feel less-good stress, which might pop up before a big test or a presentation or before a social event. It’s also normal to feel sad. There can be sad days and sad weeks and, sometimes, sad months or years. We can have a string of bad luck, loss, or failure. We can find ourselves crying because of pain or illness or because we’ve lost something or someone we love.

But even though stress and sadness are a normal part of the human emotional experience, they can become too much. Anxiety is a nonstop pressure chamber of stress that presses down upon those who experience it, rendering them unable to do normal, everyday things for the fear of what might—or might not—happen. Depression, which can exist by itself or in conjunction with anxiety, brings a kind of crushing sadness and listlessness. It’s beyond a sad day or week or month and can emerge with or without an incident to cause it.

Anxiety and depression make up two of the most common mental health challenges today. Better understanding how anxiety and depression work not only helps those who struggle with them but can also help those who don’t to better navigate their own emotional hills and valleys.
