17 Better Off On A Donkey

“No, he’s fine,” I insist to Matthew.

“He’s been in there all night, though. He’s always out here with us, and I bet he would love to go ice skating.” Matthew pouts, and I have to force back a scowl.

I don’t say anything, so Matthew takes that as a go-ahead to invite Caiden to the rink with us. Hunter, TJ, Winnifred, Theo, and I all stand awkwardly in the living room near the door as Matthew takes forever in Caiden’s room.

Is he in there while Caiden changes into clothes to go out?

My question is answered when they both appear from the hallway, Caiden dressed in white wash jeans, a white t-shirt, and a dark blue, jersey-style jacket pushed up to his elbows, looking more casual than I have ever seen him. He reaches us and leans down to lace on a pair of muted brogue boots, but all I can focus on is the way his forearms flex at the motion of simply tying shoes.

I narrow my eyes at the pair, not liking that Matthew stood in there while he undressed. With Theo practically hanging on my arm, though, I can’t reasonably express my objection. “Are we all ready to go?” I grumble.

Matthew and Caiden whisper to each other in the elevator, making expressive noises like old friends remembering inside jokes. When we get to the basement and file out of the over-filled elevator, Matthew and Caiden slide into the backseat of the SUV together. I grit my teeth, shrugging a happy-go-lucky Theo off of my arm to get into the driver's seat. Theo takes the passenger side while the other guys pile into Winnifred’s mustang.

The two men in the backseat continue to chatter, much to my irritation. If possible, this pricks at my skin more than Caiden’s make-out session with Ashlynn did last night.

In the rearview, I see Caiden pass his phone to Matthew who types in a few things before lifting the phone into the air as if they’re taking pictures. They must be because the two start making silly faces as Matthew swipes across the screen.

Is Caiden . . . using Snapchat?

Theo keeps flicking from song to song on the radio, so I subtly pull out my phone and open my Snapchat application. I open the ‘add friends’ section before typing Caiden’s number into the bar. I memorized it for work purposes when I was first assigned to his detail, but now I am using it to creep on his social media. No, I am not spiraling.

How original.

His story is public, and I watch as he and Matthew upload image after image. It’s definitely not right, but I discovered a few months ago that my phone comes with a screen recorder built in that doesn’t notify the Snapchat user when I turn it on. I don’t know why I do it, but I turn that recorder on and let it run as I click through the pictures as they are uploaded, the smiles on Caiden’s face making it worth it.
