Chapter Ten

Bringing Franceen to his house, his haven, had been worth it to see the way her eyes had widened and the soft smile that had creased the corners of her eyes as she looked around his kitchen.

Now they were about to walk down to the creek that ran behind his house. When he’d had the idea of spending the day with Franceen it hadn’t been in his mind to bring her back to his house. His initial plan had been to show her the lookout then take her to Bunya Junction’s swimming hole. But then he’d decided he didn’t want to have everyone from town looking at them and speculating. So he’d decided to bring her to his home.

They’d eaten a light lunch and he’d told her a couple of stories about the family of mice that had been living in the wardrobe in the second bedroom. Along with the possum family that had been residing in his roof. All animals had been relocated to the surrounding bush, and seemed happy with their new abode as they hadn’t bothered him in the last couple of years.

“Where are we headed now?” she asked as she stopped beside him on his back verandah.

“Another little surprise. Do you have your hat?” he asked.

“Darn, no, let me go grab it.” She rushed back inside and he had an image of her doing that in the future. Maybe with a little toddler chasing after her.

He blinked and shook his head. Where had that thought come from? Yes, when he’d bought the house, and as he renovated it, he’d kept his mind open to the thought of filling it with a family, but he hadn’t found anyone he liked enough to share his piece of paradise with—until Franceen.

He was getting very close to crossing that line, and he needed to pull back. But he was tired of sacrificing his life for his work. Not that he hated what he did. He loved it, but seeing Sindy and Ryan and their girls—not to mention Jonas and Pandora, as well as Yolanda and Michael, with their little girl, Jayne—had made him yearn for that connection to the one person who complemented his life and, as corny as it sounded, completed him.

Was Franceen that person? He didn’t know. After the way his ex, Jacqueline, had cheated on him, while still professing her love for him, trusting another woman with his heart, not to mention his future, had been harder than he thought. Yet he couldn’t continue to live his life in the past, even though it was safe. If he wanted the future he’d always envisioned, then he was going to have to man up and ask Franceen. Ask her if she wanted to see him outside of work. If the attraction he had for her was answered, and he thought it was. Little indications that she wasn’t averse to his touch. Or his kiss. They may have only locked lips once, but it had been memorable for
