Chapter 12

Colonel Harper turned his attention away from the news channel on the television screen to fold up the city map still sitting on his desk. When he finished the task, he yanked the top drawer a little too hard to get it open and almost pulled it all the way out. It got him the sight of a pack of cigarettes lodged right at the back. He pursed his lips as he stared at it and guessed the cancer sticks belonged to his predecessor.

“Shit,” he cursed as the sudden longing for a nicotine hit reared its ugly head.

He’d been trying to give up in recent times and thought he was getting past the cravings, but the glimpse of the pack showed otherwise. He brought it out, with the intention of throwing it into the trash can at the side of the desk although his hand came to a stop before he did it.

“One won’t hurt,” he muttered, but knew the words were bullshit even as he spoke them.

One would likely lead to more, no matter how much he told himself otherwise. Opening the pack, he saw there were still a few cigarettes inside and it made up his mind for him. He searched through the drawers on the off chance he might find a lighter or a box of matches, but there was no sign of either. A quiet curse spilled from his lips as the temptation to enjoy a smoke grew stronger still and he decided it was time to get some fresh air.

It was nothing but an excuse, but he shrugged off the idea he was being weak and got to his feet to walk over to the door of his office. When he stepped out to the hallway, he made his way along to the reception area then on to the arrival space in front of the building.

The sound of the low, snarling growl made hairs stand up on the back of his neck and he glanced to his left to see the Doberman standing only a few feet away. The animal’s eyes were fixed on him and its teeth bared, but the handler pulled on the leash then hissed a command to make it settle down.

“Sorry sir,” the soldier apologized, when he lifted his gaze. “Captain Lee ordered us to start patrolling the base.”

“Have you noticed anything out of the ordinary?”

“No sir,” the soldier replied. “Everything appears normal.”

Colonel Harper nodded his head and asked the question that was really on his mind when he lifted the pack of cigarettes to show it.

“Do you have a light?”

“Yes sir,” the soldier replied and reached in his pocket to bring out a lighter.

Colonel Harper was quick to get a cigarette from the pack and was aware of the dog watching him as he moved closer. It made him wary, but the handler kept a tight grip on the leash as his superior leaned in.

“Thanks,” Colonel Harper said when he pulled the lit cigarette from between his lips. “Carry on.
