EIGHTEEN
When Cecil, the owner and head mad rune inscriber at SuNaTran, first expressed the desire that he wanted to find a way to destroy the Beast, Grey Sneakerâs nightmare of a menace disguised as a car, he told us he runed the Dark Goat with the same runes found on the Beast.
I thought he was insane.
Creating two vehicles that are impossible to destroy, and have the potential to kill their drivers, sounds beyond homicidal. Right now, I was grateful that homicidal maniac was on our side.
I kept my foot on the gas as the Dark Goat punched into the whirlwind of energy with a screech and tearing of metal. We were lifted up and whipped around as parts of the Dark Goat were ripped off.
Peaches whined even louder as the driverâs side mirror was sheared off. I saw one of the wheels bounce off the hood and slam into the windshield.
It was not looking good for the Dark Goat.
âMonty?â I said, white-knuckling the steering wheel as the passenger-side mirror flew by. This was followed by small cracks forming in the driverâs side window. âDid you just kill the Dark Goat?â
âOnly if Cecilâs runes fail us,â Monty said, holding on to the door handle. âBrace yourself.â
âFor what?â I yelled. âWhat more can we possibly face?â
The interior of the Dark Goat took on a red glow, reminding me of the interior of a darkroom, back when photographic film was developed in fluid.
Peaches let out another whine mixed with a low growl as the red light became deeper and shifted to orange. I felt the pull of energy from my body as the Dark Goat reassembled itself.
We sailed out of the whirlwind and landed in the middle of 1st Avenue, bouncing forwards uncontrollably, narrowly missing several taxicabs before coming to a stop across the street.
Incredibly, the Dark Goat was intact.
I couldnât say the same for my nerves as I sat in the Dark Goat and looked across to the alley. The whirlwind had siphoned a large chunk of the alley into nothingness.
For a few seconds, I sat absolutely still, waiting for the world to catch up.
<You need practice. If you ate more meat, you would drive better.>
<Meat has nothing to do with what just happened.>
<I know. Meat would help you move the car straight, not in circles. Please eat more meat.>
I slowly exited the Dark Goat, unsteady on my feet.
I was about to respond to my very zen hellhound when Monty stepped out. I noticed he wasnât looking at the damage in the alley. I followed his gaze and saw the figure on the roof of the adjacent building; I couldnât tell much, except that it was a female and was glowing the same orange as the disassembled Ogre. She gave me a short nod and disappeared from sight.
âWho, or what, was that?â
âThe next successor, obviously,â Monty said. âIâm certain weâll find out who that is in short order.â
âIâm not really up for another âIâm going to eliminate youâ session,â I said, still looking up at the roof.
