Marick sighed deeply as he walked out of the dungeon. Despite all the bonuses heâd received after defeating the bandaged king, and despite the strengthening of his body, a large part of him felt almost... numb, lingering in the borderlands of exhaustion and excitement. His body was fine. It was, in fact, brimming with life and vigor. His mind, however, was tired. Just how long was he in that dungeon, exactly? Time did not seem to hold much meaning down there. A hundred chambers, cleared of monsters, again and again, and it all felt as though it had all passed in mere minutes.
Marick closed his eyes, sheathed both Peregrine and Pin, and breathed in deeply. âI think I just need some sleepâyeah. Thatâs just what I need.â
When he walked into the arcane sanctum, Marick was mildly surprised to find his mother there, alongside three children of the Lancel FamilyâBenjamin, Jedediah, and Jericho. Jayce, their youngest, and their parents, were nowhere in sight. Marick froze as his eyes locked with his motherâs frantic gaze. He gulped and raised his hands in the air. âNow, before you start yelling at me, Mother, Iââ
âJayce has gone missing,â his mother suddenly said. Her tone was both weary and fearful. Her eyes were redânot with sadness but rage. Marick gulped again. His mother could be terrifying when she was furious. âWhile you were down there for what mustâve been hours and hours, the little boy frolicked in the courtyardâthe same courtyard he and his brothers were told not to venture into. And now heâs gone. Taken, I suspect, by one of the dark things that still dwell here. You need to find him, Marick.â
Marick nodded, wasting no time as he stepped forward towards them and the exit. His mother nodded back. âWhere are the boyâs parents? Are they searching for him?â
âI told them not to,â his mother replied. âHowever, they did not listen to me, which is understandable, really; I wouldâve done the same in their stead. Theyâre searching for their boy right now. They found a stash of weapons somewhere on the upper floors and ventured out into the courtyard. The same courtyard thatâs overrun by tall grasses and weeds. The same courtyard thatâs perfect for monsters to hide in. Iâm going to take an educated guess and say theyâre probably already dead.â
The children winced. Benjamin, most of all, seemed utterly devastated; his eyes were dead despite the tears that streamed from them. His younger brothers, Jedediah and Jericho, were frightful, but it didnât seem as though they understood the full gravity of the situation, the mortal peril of it. Marick shook his head and turned an eye over his shoulder at Benjamin, the eldest of the Lancel sons. âWhat happened?â
âI told him to stay put, sir, while me, Jedediah, and Jericho trimmed the grasses that were growing near the porch,â Benjamin replied. The boyâs tone was a shuddering one, filled with fear and regret and a measure of anger, likely directed back at himself for failing to take care of his brother.
