“Boys, are you ready?” a man’s voice yelled through the door. Finn sat up immediately and hurried to the door. “Come on, I told you we’d start early.” Finn stood with the door open wearing only his underwear. “Finn? Wake up.” He snapped his fingers in Finn’s face.

“Carcy?” Finn finally asked.

“You can call me Carson. Now hurry up and get dressed. I’ll meet you in the restaurant for a quick snack.” Finn turned around as he closed the door.

“Who was that?” I asked.

“Carson,” Finn said clearly as confused as I was. “Let’s get dressed and go downstairs.”

I wasn’t sure exactly who Carson was, and I didn’t remember Carcy mentioning anyone else so where Finn looked confused, I was curious. We were dressed and walking down the stairs a short time later. Carcy had told us she was only open for breakfast on the weekends so today there would be no food service until lunchtime.

“There you are, sorry if I woke you, but I wanted to get an early start. Especially since we don’t know how long this will take.” A tall thin boy stood in the kitchen where Carcy had stood last night, next to the long table she used as a base for the food she would summon.

“Have we met?” I asked.

The boy tipped his head and looked at both of us. He looked familiar, but not so much I could say where I knew him from. But for Finn it was obvious.

“This is Carcy and Carson,” he said and stepped closer to him.

“I knew you were more observant than you let on. Yes, it’s me. Carcy is my name when I’m working, and also my alter ego.” He grinned at Finn and crossed his arms. He was very delicate with long thin fingers and a perfectly straight nose. “Remember when I told you my family didn’t like the real me? Well, Carcy is part of me, and I’m not giving her up for anything.”

“Nice to meet you, Carson,” Finn said and shook his hand.

He looked past Finn at me and waited for my reaction. I shrugged my shoulder before speaking. “Eh, you do you. Whatever makes you happy I have no issue with.” It was true. I’d learned how hurtful judgment could be and I swore when my parents had deserted me, I would never be so judgmental.

“Okay then,” he said as he clapped his hands together. “I made us a few breakfast sandwiches for something quick to eat. Help yourself to some coffee too.” The three of us stood at the table and ate as we chatted about the night before and what we thought would happen today.

“Please understand, Finn, I’m not sure this will help you, but I know my own magic is more connected to nature. So being in the woods connects me all over again. I feel stronger and like I can do anything when I’m there. Which is part of the reason I chose this location for my restaurant. There’s no way I could live in a city surrounded by concrete.
