S unday morning was Amy’s half-day. The family was expected to sleep as long as they liked, allowing Amy the same privilege; everyone prepared his or her own breakfast, even Lissie. Bert awoke at noon, feeling sinfully refreshed, and went downstairs to find George and Lissie engaged in a grave conversation about whether or not animals went to heaven when they died.

“Morning, Bert. Glad you got down here before I left. I have an appointment with Nedra about setting up clinic programming for the fall. Just wanted to say good-bye and thanks.”

“I have a feeling that you’re trying to avoid a discussion I want to have with you, but I’ll see you on Monday. Lissie, you finish your cereal while I walk Uncle George to the car.”

En route to the driveway Bert said, “That was a stupid, dangerous thing for you to drop on Alice last night. How could you have done such a thing when I told you I was worried about her stability lately?”

“Bert, I honestly couldn’t believe that Alice hadn’t heard the story. My most humble apologies, and truly, there is nothing to discuss.”

Regarding his colleague with narrowed eyes, Bert shrugged and decided it wasn’t worth getting into a hassle with his best friend over something it might be better to disregard. Pragmatically, there was no point in rehashing the incident. He had enough problems already .

“O.K., George, but I’ll see you at dinner Monday night anyway. I have some personal matters to talk over with you, if you have the time.”

“Fine, Bert—say, isn’t that the nun I saw the other day when I was driving up here? Are you part of her rounds?”

“Guess so. Alice says she hangs around here a lot. Maybe we ought to start locking the doors, she could be a burglar in disguise.”

Laughing at the incongruity of the idea, Bert waved his friend off and went back into the house, ignoring the nun’s stare in his direction.

They had a pleasant family day; Alice seemed happy, thank heaven, and Stacey, though distracted, was polite.

“What’s the matter, baby,” asked her father sympathetically, “you want to talk to your old man about some problem? Having trouble with your boyfriend?”

Giving her father a queer smile, Stacey shook her head. “No, Dad, nothing like that. I guess I’m just growing up and getting more serious about life. If I may be excused now, I have to make some phone calls about the party at Dana’s house tonight.”

“You won’t be late, dear, will you?” queried her mother. “Your father may decide to go back tonight, and I don’t like to be here without a car.”

“No, Mom, it’s an early party. Richie and I should be home by midnight. It’s a barbeque, so we won’t be here for dinner.” With a wave, she disappeared into the house, leaving her parents on the shaded porch.

Bert and his wife discussed how nice it was that the kids seemed to be becoming friends at last, and what they might be up to sexually.
