Chapter Five

For a moment I thought I could break him, make him surrender to my touch and win this game, but then a car alarm went off in the lot where he’d parked below his window. And just like that, the magic was gone.

Lennox went to the window to see what was going and before I could ask what he was doing, he went outside to check it out. He was gone for a while and when he came back, he said he was taking me home because someone had smashed his vehicle’s back window. Lennox looked furious. How could this happen in a gated community? Maybe someone had left the entrance open…

"Oh my God," I gasped, staring at him in total disbelief. "Maybe it was just an accident. Is there—"

"I’m not treating this as a coincidence. Someone must have been watching the house, and now they know you're here. We need to go," he cut me off, grabbing his phone and ushering me outside. He called one of his men as we rushed to the car. Once inside, he started the engine, cutting the call off.

"Jason is checking the CCTV cameras in the area," Lennox stated.

I’d been looking forward to some quality time together, but now I didn’t know what to make of this. Had it been a random accident and was Lennox overreacting? Then again, the reason he was still here was because of me—I was still in danger. Was Richard up to something? Although I was ready to protest, I had to put my big girl panties on, take a step back, and allow Lennox to do his job.

It seemed like every time I got close to Lennox, something happened. After the night at the hotel, he was shot and landed in hospital for a few weeks. Now, Richard was at large…

This whole situation was unbelievably frustrating and I had no idea when it was going to end.

And when it did, with Richard finally caught again… what then? Maybe I was thinking too much.

I remained quiet in the car because he looked none too happy, his jaw taut and his mouth set in a thin line, constantly checking the roads through his mirrors.

In an ideal world, I didn't want Lennox to be paranoid. I wanted to continue living my life, but now this seemed almost impossible as hazards surfaced wherever we went. After the incident in the hotel room, I doubted Richard would risk getting close to me so soon again, but he was freaking crazy so I had no clue what his next move would be. The alternative was terrifying, but I didn't want to remain in this limbo with him—dangers or not.

The rest of the day passed quickly, so I caught up on my work while Lennox did his thing downstairs, looking into what happened. I was mad with myself because I should have found a way to get his mind off things. What else could we do at this point? He had to let
