âSo, are we gonna talk about it?â
âHmm?â I mumble distractedly, trying to memorize these historical facts that donât seem to be sticking.
âEverest,â Knox says as he snaps his fingers in front of my face. âWhatâs with that big-ass hickey on your neck?â
I groan, rolling over on his floor until Iâm on my back and staring up at him from his position on the couch. âIâd rather not.â
âYeah, thatâs not happening.â With a snort, he slinks down the couch until heâs sitting beside me. âSpill.â
I nibble on my bottom lip. I tell Knox everything and this should be no different. Still, thereâs something that makes me hesitate. Like voicing out loud what Rhys and I are doing will just highlight how wrong it is.
He raises his eyebrow expectantly, and I sigh, turning over again so he canât see my flaming cheeks. âWeâre⦠kind of messing around.â
Thereâs a moment of silence as Knox digests the information. I hear a sharp intake of breath before he speaks. âThe same asshole who punched me?â
âYeahâ¦â I mutter sheepishly. Iâll never admit to either Knox or Rhys just how spectacularly hot I found that.
âThe same guy you hate?â
âYup.â
âThe same guy who hates you?â
I flip over, narrowing my eyes. âAre you going to come to a point?â
He furrows his brow and shakes his head. âYou realize what a terrible idea this is, right?â
Oh, Iâm absolutely aware that what Rhys and I are doing will lead to nothing but disaster. I get that itâs fucked up in more ways than one but, fuck me, I canât stop.
âItâll be fine,â I tell him, hoping if I say it enough times, itâll be true.
He pauses, picking at one of the holes in his jeans, trying to appear unfazed, but I know him better than that. âAre you dating?â
I scoff. âFuck no.â
âSo youâre just messing around,â he states. Thereâs a flash of something unrecognizable in his eyes. âWhat if Elton finds out?â
âHe wonât,â I snap, mostly because the idea of my brother knowing terrifies me. âItâs just a fling.â
âHate-fuck buddies?â
âExactly.â
He worries the inside of his cheek. âHeâs going to hurt you, babe.â
No. I wonât give him the chance. I have to remember that heâs not the guy I used to know who treated me like I was something special. Weâre far beyond that. Itâs going to stay purely physical until we get tired of each other. After that⦠Well, weâll just part ways and pretend like it never happened.
I appreciate that Knox is worried, though. Heâs looking out for me like he always has. âThat wonât happen.â
He nods, but itâs obvious he doesnât believe me. After a moment, he raises a pierced eyebrow. âI guess this means weâre not fucking around anymore.â
âYeah,â I chuckle, scratching the back of my neck. âProbably not a good idea.â
Not like it would be a hardship. Iâve enjoyed everything Iâve done with him, but now that Iâve had Rhys, nothing else compares. He said he would ruin me for anyone else, and he has, because I have no interest in having Knoxâs hands anywhere near me.
