I THINK THAT Joe opened up to me about his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, because I never mentioned her and always steered clear of the subject. He gradually told me the Marilyn Monroe–Joe DiMaggio story. He shocked me with his candor as he spoke about his volcanic relationship with her.

“Doc, I was married to this great gal, named Marilyn,” Joe said to me, as if I didn’t know.

I had to contain myself to keep from revealing how eager I was for him to go on. Joe was about to speak to me about his number-one taboo subject. He wasn’t accustomed to speaking bluntly about Marilyn. I know he also spoke with Morris Engelberg, my Brooklyn brother, about Marilyn, but I never knew what he told each of us, and Morris and I never compared notes. That Florida, California, and New York information blockade was at work again.

I have to preface Joe’s account of their marriage by saying that Italian men don’t talk about what happens under the sheets. The never-kiss-and-tell edict is always in play. In the divorce his first wife Dorothy Arnold brought against him, Joe refused to even mention her affairs as she sued for more and more money. Joe would never make his family or his kid look bad in the public eye, regardless of what personal and professional trauma it brought to his doorstep. Turn the other cheek, get your face bashed in, it didn’t matter. Always protect the honor of your family, especially your children.

Realizing that Joe was in a revelatory mood, I had to keep a poker face and let him talk without interrupting him.

“Yeah, Doc, Marilyn was a good kid, but she was a confused kid,” Joe began, sounding more like a father than a husband. He dismissed a lot of rumors out of hand. Then he began to talk like her husband. “We got along exceptionally well in every possible way.”

I knew where this was going.

“When we got together in the bedroom, it was like the gods were fighting; there were thunderclouds and lightning above us.”

Picking up my fork, I thought, “Oh, my God, now Joe is talking to me about his sex life with Marilyn Monroe, the sex goddess.”

Joe went on to say that their physical compatibility was the basis of the best relationship he ever had and a big part of what brought them together. Great sexual chemistry was what made Joe love Marilyn, and vice versa. They mutually achieved a physical intimacy neither had before. Still very protective of his physical interaction with Marilyn, he spoke in circumspect ways. He was very respectful in his descriptions.

Joe was still checking me out for a reaction, but I was silent, as if barely noticing the conversation, not an easy thing to do under the circumstances.

“Doc, Marilyn told me that no man ever satisfied her like I did,” Joe added.

Unwilling to meet his eyes, I shuffled my fork around in the plate of phyllo pastry.

Joe revealed that the only big issue he had with Marilyn was her personal hygiene.
