Chapter Eight

I was subdued at work on Wednesday for the second day in a row. Jessica had the day off, meaning that I only had to oversee the other cashiers, none of whom ever talked to me like Jessica. That was okay; I wasn’t sure I would’ve been able to handle Jessica asking me for updates about my “crush situation,” as she surely would’ve. I spent the day handling my work competently, all while internally going over and over every possibility I could think of for later that evening.

What if something goes wrong? What if Taylor doesn’t fit into the team? What if she does, but we still aren’t strong enough to beat the striga? What if we do win? What then? What will Taylor expect? What will I expect?

Ultimately, I thought more about Taylor and how she would fit in than I did about the striga itself. If Taylor didn’t fit in with our group, I wasn’t just letting the group down; I was letting Taylor down too. It was all too easy to picture her crestfallen face as she was told by the group that she didn’t quite fit in, and that she would have to go back to relying on random, one off teams to make any progress in Vamp Pyre.

I still can’t believe she doesn’t have a team already. She’s really quite skilled, and not just because of her high level. Come to think of it, I’m surprised she doesn’t really have any friends at all. You’d think such a warm, friendly person would be at the center of a large group of friends…

The most exciting thing to happen at work was a customer coming in to complain about the lack of eggnog on our shelves. The customer wasn’t interested in hearing the excuses from our junior cashier about the lack of eggnog in our coolers; they certainly weren’t happy when I stepped in and explained that, as it was late May, we weren’t exactly in the holiday season when eggnog was stocked. My suggestion that the customer purchases ingredients to make their own eggnog was also not well received, and the customer left, grumbling violently about the lack of proper customer service in the modern era.

“You know, I wouldn’t mind it if we carried eggnog all year round.”

I turned away from the departing customer and found Malcolm, my counterpart, sidling up beside me. A few steps behind was Tim, nervously wiping his glasses on his shirt.

“Eggnog is overrated,” I said. “Almost as overrated as waffles.”

“Odd comparison,” Malcolm remarked. “Odd, and dead wrong.”

“You handled that well, Kelsie,” Tim said, gently lowering his glasses back over his face. “I never was good at handling abrasive customers. You’ve always seemed to have a real knack for it.”

I shrugged. “I guess I’ve just gotten used to it. Anyway, what can I do for you two?”

“Your shift’s over, Kelsie,” Malcom said. “It ended fifteen minutes ago.”

I swung around to look at the clock. It had actually been seventeen minutes since it ended.
