Chapter Eight
I was subdued at work on Wednesday for the second day in a row. Jessica had the day off, meaning that I only had to oversee the other cashiers, none of whom ever talked to me like Jessica. That was okay; I wasnât sure I wouldâve been able to handle Jessica asking me for updates about my âcrush situation,â as she surely wouldâve. I spent the day handling my work competently, all while internally going over and over every possibility I could think of for later that evening.
What if something goes wrong? What if Taylor doesnât fit into the team? What if she does, but we still arenât strong enough to beat the striga? What if we do win? What then? What will Taylor expect? What will I expect?
Ultimately, I thought more about Taylor and how she would fit in than I did about the striga itself. If Taylor didnât fit in with our group, I wasnât just letting the group down; I was letting Taylor down too. It was all too easy to picture her crestfallen face as she was told by the group that she didnât quite fit in, and that she would have to go back to relying on random, one off teams to make any progress in Vamp Pyre.
I still canât believe she doesnât have a team already. Sheâs really quite skilled, and not just because of her high level. Come to think of it, Iâm surprised she doesnât really have any friends at all. Youâd think such a warm, friendly person would be at the center of a large group of friendsâ¦
The most exciting thing to happen at work was a customer coming in to complain about the lack of eggnog on our shelves. The customer wasnât interested in hearing the excuses from our junior cashier about the lack of eggnog in our coolers; they certainly werenât happy when I stepped in and explained that, as it was late May, we werenât exactly in the holiday season when eggnog was stocked. My suggestion that the customer purchases ingredients to make their own eggnog was also not well received, and the customer left, grumbling violently about the lack of proper customer service in the modern era.
âYou know, I wouldnât mind it if we carried eggnog all year round.â
I turned away from the departing customer and found Malcolm, my counterpart, sidling up beside me. A few steps behind was Tim, nervously wiping his glasses on his shirt.
âEggnog is overrated,â I said. âAlmost as overrated as waffles.â
âOdd comparison,â Malcolm remarked. âOdd, and dead wrong.â
âYou handled that well, Kelsie,â Tim said, gently lowering his glasses back over his face. âI never was good at handling abrasive customers. Youâve always seemed to have a real knack for it.â
I shrugged. âI guess Iâve just gotten used to it. Anyway, what can I do for you two?â
âYour shiftâs over, Kelsie,â Malcom said. âIt ended fifteen minutes ago.â
I swung around to look at the clock. It had actually been seventeen minutes since it ended.
