The world turned to computer code that rendered into a city populating the horizon with endless rows of skyscrapers.

Estrella materialized on the rooftop patio of one skyscraper, her clothing similar to what she wore back in Los Angeles. Large bushes ahead of gothic fences were around the rooftop’s edges, making it feel like a park in the sky. Ahead were tables and chairs, occupied by men and women drinking and laughing, lingerie-clad catgirl go-go dancers gave them something to look at when boredom struck. A pool in the center offered a place to swim or sit at the edge and admire the view. And what a view you could see at the pool. One woman arose from the water, brushed back her dripping hair as beads of water rained from drenched high breasts. They encouraged skinny dipping.

As Estrella approached, she noticed two men had summoned floating screens to float over their table, listing various statuses and numbers. This was another virtual world, one she stood alone in, confused where she should go next.

“Rodriguez, welcome,” a man said from behind, Australian accent.

She faced him. Black hair gelled and spiked, his black suit and red tie, giving him an appearance that demanded respect as he reclined on an enormous lounge chair.

“Why’d you bring me here?” she asked him.

“We need to talk in person,” he said. “And this was the only way for me to get your attention.”

“Why not talk here?”

“I prefer speaking somewhere where hackers can’t record what’s going on.” He sipped his drink, then gave it a swirl, making the ice clank against the glass. “As unique as the neural web is, it’s still data that flows, networked data. Someone might hack, record, or log what I need to tell you.”

“Even on this server?”

“Yes, as we aren’t talking. Our thoughts are just turned to data.”

“That big of a deal, then?”

“You ever fought invisible targets before? Yeah, I’m not taking chances.”

Estrella grimaced. “Specters…” And he nodded. “Where do you want to meet?”

“There’s an IW speakeasy in Perth. You can find it in a club called Thunderdome. And if my sources are correct.” He gestured at the two men interacting with floating screens. “Perth will be a city you can visit IRL with a clone soon. The password to enter the speakeasy is a witch quote from Macbeth, any quote will do.” Silence fell. “Oh, that’s it, love, I have nothing else to tell you. Come visit when the pods are online.”

“You got a name?”

“Michael works for now. Michael of the Magi Coven.”
