A new search

Greg and his team were reviewing what they’d learned from Nathan and Emily.

‘So, we’ve got enough to bring Mr Standish senior in for questioning. Jim, can you see to that?’ said Greg.

Ned’s head appeared round the door. ‘I thought you’d like to know this straightaway,’ he said before he was fairly in the room.

‘You’ve got the DNA analysis back?’ said Greg.

‘Yes. And it’s what we expected. Samples taken from Mica Gabrys’s body match some of the samples taken at Nails Galore.’

‘Which?’ asked Jim.

‘One sample from the neck of an opened bottle of vodka found on the kitchen floor. It’d rolled under a kitchen cupboard, so maybe that explains why it wasn’t taken away with them. Two samples from the body of Madame Trieste. There were other results with no matches as yet.’

Greg had been making notes as Ned spoke. ‘The samples from Madame Trieste,’ he said. ‘Where were they taken from?’

‘One from under the fingernails of her right hand, suggesting she scratched him in the struggle. The other from her face. That one seemed to be saliva, suggesting he spat on or licked her face.’

There was silence for a while, then Greg said, ‘It’s helpful, but not enough. It ties him to Nails Galore and Madame Trieste, but the defence could argue he’d visited for other reasons – to use a prostitute, collect money, or deliver drugs. It doesn’t definitively tie him to the violence and torture.’

‘We’ve got him on that chap’s door camera at the right time,’ argued Chris.

‘True, but…’

‘There’s one other thing,’ said Ned. ‘I was saving the best for last. One other sample was mixed. The technicians thought at first it’d been contaminated, but they persisted. It contained Mica’s DNA and Madame’s.’

‘That’s not telling us anything new,’ started Greg but Ned interrupted again.

‘His sample was from saliva, hers from vitreous humour.’

‘Meaning,’ said Greg with dawning excitement. The rest of the team looked at each other and Chris punched the air in a silent symbol of triumph.

‘Meaning that there’s a greater than even chance that he was there when her eyes were removed.’

Greg stood. ‘That’s enough for me,’ he said. ‘I’m off to get a search warrant for Horses Mill House. While I’m gone, Jim and Chris, can you organise two teams? One to arrest Standish and search his premises. The second for the Gabryses’ place. I want the teams organised, but no destinations given out until we despatch. No leaks. And for the same reason I want both raids to take place simultaneously. Jim, you’ll lead on Standish, and I will on Gabrys. In both cases I want all team members in stab vests etc and armed with batons, tasers and CS spray. And in both cases I want armed response on standby just in case.’

‘Not necessary for Standish, surely,’ objected Jim.

‘Maybe not. At least not as regards the man himself. But the people he’s been associating with? They’re another matter and we’re playing safe. Let’s aim to go in two hours. Get to it.’

Chris caught up with Greg in the corridor.
