Murder has a way of rippling through generations. It makes no difference how it happens. When someone is murdered, people survive—the husbands, wives, brothers, aunts, uncles, sons, and daughters of the dead. Just their mere presence on earth cries out for justice when their loved ones have not been given the law’s full protections, even in death.

By the end of the century, their names had all but been forgotten. But the martyrdom the KKK and their adherents so feared did indeed take place. As the century was approaching its close and the new millennium its beginning, forces were at work to bring the importance of the civil rights struggle to the attention of future generations. The vehicle for that interest was the law, and an increased interest in American society to see justice done in what have become known as “cold cases.”

The murders of the three civil rights workers fell into that category.

All it would take would be another twenty-nine years for it to finally be brought to resolution.
