A letter from my dear Cary. It seems that William is the lustiest Babe for his age, that ever was seen in Derbyshire. Sir C. Mills is to wed a Widow.

August 10th.

A play acted most admirably in the private theatre here. Even the performances of the most noted English actors would seem insipid to me besides this Vivacious and Witty Miming. Their very hands seemed to speak. I own find the french more entertaining on than off the stage. The talk now is of nothing but Religion or rather Abuse of it. 'Tis the Mode to be an Atheist and a Heathen. Monsieur de Belisle a relative and protégé of the Duchess, expressed Prodigious Contempt when I confessed that I was a Devout Protestant. "Fancy, mademoiselle is a dévote" he announced sneeringly to the Company and there was a general titter. I was Revenged notwithstanding this, for later he mentioned Richardson's Clarissa Harlowe in terms of highest praise, whereupon 'twas for me to cry out that the Novelist was utterly Demodé now in England. The young man in Question is short and has no chin and besides, all this Philosophy in my opinion does not add to the attraction of a young gentleman. How different indeed from my ardent Mr. A. Pray Heaven I shall find a letter from him in Paris. My father declares that he observes a vast alteration in french manners since he visited this country as a young man. Then, the Petits Maitres talked and thought of nothing but Gallantry. He is prepared to wager that these Intellectual Airs are but a superficial covering for the National Licentiousness.
