As I dissolve the sugar cube in my drink,

there’s a comma in the sky,

my hipsway across the beach, your body,

a sign, a sigh: Lifeguard not on duty.

You and I are close again.

I eat the lemon cake, you do the dishes.

I undress, you

undress me. We are strange tides

of living, a sentence

of years where half of what I tell you

is true. But we’ve sipped a marriage on that,

the sweet dissolving

in darkness—yes, all that bitterness

is hard to love—but I’m thankful

for the precision of your fingers,

the ability to unfasten me from the lace

of decades holding me in.
