By the time they left the coffee shop, the rain had stopped and the sun was shining brightly. Scott followed Emma back to the house and, once there, grabbed her hand and dragged her into the library where Tim was still going over some of the old books.

“Anything?” Scott asked.

“Not really. I tested the goo from the slide and it’s definitely ectoplasm.”

“I figured it would be, but I don’t think I’ve heard of it causing a rash like that before. Any idea of how to get rid of it for him?”

“I’ve got Polly doing a little research on it. What’s up with you? You look a little upset.”

“I think the truck guy tried to accost Emma.”

“What? How? What do you mean you think he tried to?”

“Emma, tell him what happened.”

“I can’t say for sure what happened or that it was the same guy, but a tall man turned the corner right in front of me and I walked into him. He never said anything threatening, but I felt scared. He was clenching and unclenching his hands and I couldn’t get around him.”

“So, how did you get away?”

“Scott pulled up right next to the sidewalk that I was on and the guy took off.”

“Which tends to indicate that he did not have good intentions,” Scott added drily.

“We have to figure out who the hell this guy is.”

“I get that, but I don’t know how we even start, unless you want to just drive around town until we see a black pickup.”

“Yeah, that would work, right?”

“Why don’t we go see that one other kid, Joshua. See if he has anything to add about Shelly’s situation and then tonight, we’ll have to toss around some idea about the truck guy.”

“I feel like we’re just running around in circles, with both of these cases and I’m getting a little bit frustrated.”

“I can see that,” Tim said, “but we can only do what we can do.”

Scott’s mood hadn’t improved within the next hour or so while they made their way to the shop that Joshua Miller worked at.

“It’s still open, isn’t it?” he asked, as they pulled into an empty lot. There were no cars in the service bays, and it didn’t look like anyone was in the office or the waiting area.

“It’s only mid-afternoon, why would they be closed?”

The two men got out of the car and headed towards the office, a little bell over the top of the door rang as it opened, but no one came to see who was entering.

“Let me take a walk around,” Scott said, checking to be sure his gun was secured in his waistband. With all the unusual happenings lately, he thought it best to be prepared for anything.

There was no danger here, he discovered when he walked out back and found a young man in his mid-twenties standing close to a young woman who was wearing barely anything at all.

The guy, who Scott assumed must be Joshua, ran his fingers down the girl’s cheek and then across her breasts, tweaking her nipple and making her giggle.
