IN AN UNFAMILIAR ROOM in the unfamiliar city, Karina curled up on the bed, alone except for her thoughts. She was too old for a nap, but here she was, sent off for one. Because of jet lag, Mama said. The house was silent, making it too easy for her to focus on her circular thoughts.

Mama and Daddums always told the truth. They answered every question. But when she asked her mother the same question as her father—What am I?—she’d gotten more evasion. Mama had hugged her tight and said, “The most wonderful gift I’ve ever received.”

Like that was an answer. She’d been so quick to change the subject that Karina knew something was seriously wrong with her.

It couldn’t be physical because she felt the same as she always had. She never had a headache or a cough. She never caught any of the childhood diseases she’d read about, and she could run twice as fast as her mother.

Which meant it had to be a mental problem. That made sense, because over the last few weeks, too many of her parents’ conversations had ended when she came into a room. And her mother, who never fussed over either of them, had begun asking Karina what she wanted for supper and making more tea than ever. Earlier today at the zoo, she’d noticed her father watching her as if he expected something weird to happen.

She knew she hadn’t been born to them. She was probably the child of crazy people. Mama probably stole her from the mental hospital to keep her from having to grow up there. In the very back of her memory, Karina had a vague recollection of traveling for miles amid an atmosphere of fear before they lived on the island.

The wail of a distant siren filled the air. Karina was grateful for the noise because it made her feel less alone. Pulling the blanket into her fist, she curled up in the center of the bed and tried to pretend she was home, back where it was safe.
