CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
December third arrived ominously, with an overcast sky and rain not far off. As she and Vera Cruz silently waited for the train that would take her away from him, Alex’s mood was as gloomy as the Folkestone morning. The last few months with her mysterious lover had been a whirlwind journey leaving her body addicted and her mind enslaved. And now, despite surrendering to his will and allowing him to consume her reason, she still had no idea how he felt about her. She’d repeatedly told him she loved him, even pledged her undying devotion, but he’d been surprisingly unaffected by her admissions. She’d tried to find out why he popped in and out of her life without warning or explanation, but despite her best efforts, he’d masterfully averted her questions. As the rain beat down on the platform’s roof, she willed him to say something, anything, that would make her feel there was commitment from him. But he did not.
As Alex unconsciously dropped her head to his shoulder, she sensed a familiar soul destroying distance. And a deep insecurity she thought under control returned. Now, just minutes before the train’s arrival, she looked deep inside. Deep enough to realize that sporadic moments of unadulterated bliss might be all she would ever get from him. And she was suddenly unsure whether she could live that way. She could, she told herself, because when they were together, he took her to seven kinds of heaven.
But wasn’t it usual for lovers to share where they were going, and what they were doing? Wasn’t it normal to want to know if your lover actually cared about you? Wasn’t it okay to want to know that the relationship was important? But if she pressed him, would she jeopardize the little they had? And, being realistic, what exactly was it they had? Hating herself for being weak and needing him so desperately, Alex had to face facts — he’d been up front from the beginning, and she had no basis to force their relationship to a place he didn’t want it to go. Was she simply afraid he wouldn’t come back? She’d spent her life pitying dependent women who lived and breathed only to pander to the whims of the man in their life. But, like them, she was now condoning Vera Cruz’s emotional darkness, because she was terrified of being alone. And as Alex’s mind drifted to a world without him, a tear slid down her cheek.

Vera Cruz felt her grip tighten on his arm, and recognized it as a cry for possession. He lifted her head and kissed her tenderly. And though he was a master at his despicable craft, even he was surprised how easily he’d won this particular game. Like all successful couriers he constantly looked for ways to change his patterns in case he was being watched. And considering how uneventfully he had negotiated customs in both France and England, having Alex along on the trip had been a sound decision.
