“Stupid man trying to do everything on his own,” I mumble as I slam my bedroom door shut and flop down on the bed.

I thought things would be different after I gave myself to Marcus, but it seems nothing has changed - nothing except getting knocked unconscious. I reach my hand around the back of my head and press lightly on the tender spot in the center of my head.

I can’t imagine what would have happened to me if Marcus hadn’t stopped whoever came to steal me away, but he was here as always. “Nothing happened. I don’t understand why he is shutting me out again.”

I look around the small room for something to keep me occupied during my exile to rest. I don’t need rest, I’m fine. Yeah, I have a big knot on my head, but that’s no reason for the change of heart. My thoughts are interrupted by a soft knock on the door before Marcus pushes it open.

His arm is bandaged neatly, I can see no signs of his wound. “I brought your dinner,” he says as he places the small buffet tray over my lap.

“Are you okay? It must have hurt taking that bullet out with no pain meds.” I send a megawatt smile in his directions, hoping to get some reaction from him but nothing. “Want me to kiss it all better?” I giggle as I move the tray he set on my lap and place it beside the bed on the floor.

“No.” Marcus’s voice sounds distant and cold, the warmth I felt radiating off him earlier has vanished. He sighs before having a seat on the bed beside me and wrapping his hands around mine, “Look Frankie, what happened earlier no matter how amazing it was can’t happen again. My job is to protect you, I can’t do that properly if I’m distracted.”

“Distracted? Am I just a distraction to you now,” my voice cracks with emotion, “Marcus look at me, I’m fine.” I attempt to pull my hands from his grasp, but he just grips them tighter.

“Frankie, I need you to understand. You mean everything to me, if anything happened to you…” his voice breaks off at the end as he squeezes his eyes shut tight.

“Nothing will happen to me. You’re here to protect me, as you always have been.” I grip his hands tightly, willing my love for him to reach his heart but he yanks his hands away and stands.

“I can’t protect you if all I can think about is how your pussy tasted as you came or how amazing it felt to have the other piece of my heart. Frankie, you don’t understand what could have happened if I didn’t walk back inside when I did.”

“You’re full of shit, Marcus and we both know it. What is really going on here?”

“What’s going on is that I’m calling your father and telling him to send someone else to protect you. I’m no longer fit for the job.” Marcus turns and heads for the door, but I can’t let things end like this.
