3 The situation is more complicated in at least some herd-dwelling species, in which herd members share, via rotation, pro-social “duties” in assuming the costly role of serving as “sentry” and may cooperate (again potentially at cost to the individual) to repel predators – but the principle is, I trust, clear enough.
