Chapter Fifteen

The first thing we had to figure out was how to get into the tower. It also brought up several things we had to consider when it came to the threat of discovery as well.

“Remember, once we’re inside, there’s going to be a hex on the place to prevent anyone from apparating into or outside of the walls,” said Hightower from our hiding spot on the grounds. “So once we’re in, we’re committed. If we get caught, we have to find a way to get outside so we can get away. They’ll know that as well, so they will do everything in their power to make sure we don’t.”

“I suspect the windows will be enchanted too,” I said. “Just like at the repository?”

“You can bet on it,” said Hightower. “And there will probably be several other nasty surprises that we will just have to figure out along the way.”

“Like how to get in?” said Stella, nodding at what seemed to be the only entrance. It was a massive stone door that looked like it would take me shifting into my dragon form just to be able to budge it. “How do you move something like that?”

“A strong rakshasa or air elemental could move it,” said Hightower. “But that’s besides the point. By the time you actually figured it out, you’d have the whole castle on you. We’ll have to find another way.”

“The roof?” I asked, pointing to the conical shape that towered above. “Worked for us last time.”

“True, but there won’t be an air shaft up there for us to get into,” said Hightower. “This isn’t a more modern building like the repository so we have to think medieval in order to get in.”

That brought on its own set of challenges, but it was as I scanned the property that I heard the sound of running water. Gesturing for them to stay put, I followed the sound until I found a small waste output a short distance away. The waste was pouring into the canyon from the other side, but it was all coming from a tube that was just large enough that it could fit us.

“I found our entry point,” I told them once I came back. “Hope you don’t mind getting a little smelly.”

Stella raised an eyebrow. “Just how smelly are we talking?”

Ten minutes later, all three of us were making our way up the tunnel, trudging through water that was ice cold. Hightower was in the front, and that meant that once again her amazing rear was in my face. Somehow, I think she planned it that way. Stella was right behind me, and I could tell she had the most reservations about the wastewater that we were trudging through.

“Whatever you do, please don’t ever associate your memories of this with me in the future,” Stella told me. “I don’t even want you to see me like this again, moving through who knows what kind of water this is.”

“Stella, to me, I’ll always see you like that night we spent at Carmen’s.
