“All right, all right! Enough of this Chett talk! I’ll deal with him when the time comes. After training, Ozi is going to have us working the Lilith case.”

“She’s a B class threat, with an A class attitude,” Kate said.

“Her nest is in Salem,” Tori added.

“Her nest?”

“Yeah. Her community of thralls, ghouls, servants, and what have you. Ozi and I had a little chat while waiting for you. I told her I’d bring you to speed with a couple things.”

“How the hell does she manage to grow a community of demons right under our noses? I get the whole turning humans into demons thing. But feeding and hunting is a totally different story, right? I mean, these are still demons we are talking about here. How aren’t they leaving a trail for cops to follow?”

“The lack of sightings is pretty self-explanatory when you really think about it, Reiner. These demons hide themselves as humans. Meaning, they are everywhere. Don’t believe everything you hear in the news. People know something supernatural is going on out there. The government is paying victims to remain quiet about it. We are talking thousands of people and millions of dollars. Which makes sense. If the mass population at large knew about demons, it’d have caused an uproar by now. Luckily, Ozi has a good cop in SPD who flags us when she suspects demonic activity. Before they could sweep it under the rug, the Demon Hunter Corp has a chance to investigate, if we catch it in time.”

“Their agenda is clear,” Kate added to Tori’s statement. “Growing Gorganu’s army comes first. Feeding on humans and terrorizing them are just the perks of their ultimate assignment.”

Tori sucked her teeth. “Expand the demon king’s army, one sorry soul at a time.”

“That would make a pretty damn good slogan,” I jested, both girls turning to me pan-faced. “Heh, I was only messing around. Besides, you gotta laugh about this kinda stuff sometimes, right? Otherwise, it’d break you down mentally. I’m no vegan, but slashing a bunch of Bambi’s friends still didn’t sit right with me.”

“Who knew you out of all people had a soft spot for animals?” Tori smart-mouthed.

“I know you do,” I said lewdly, Tori breaking out in a blush.

Kate couldn’t help but giggle behind the steering wheel as she turned up the corner to my house. She parked a few cars from in front of my place, prompting Tori to fix herself to leave.

“You’re going to feel a lot different when it’s humans you’re decapitating,” Katelyn said, changing the light mood into something more serious. “You’re right though, Reiner. Sometimes you have to find the comedy in this line of work. It’s stressful, to put things mildly. I’ve been at it for a short time, and I could tell you—every death is different, but the guilt you feel is always the same. You know deep down you’re fighting demons to make the world a safer place, however, those demons are attached to living breathing human beings. With friends and families, and jobs… and important roles in society.
