Winston woke from his small hide in a copse of trees between two small hills. He ran his hands through his greasy hair and rinsed his mouth with a bottle of water before returning to the old utility truck he had borrowed from the farm store. From the back, he removed the scoped rifle, closed his eyes tight, and slowly reopened them while letting out a long yawn. He looked up the hill toward the farm store when he thought he heard a vehicle’s engine. It was sooner than he had expected, but he had prepared for the eventuality.
He was in the field, hundreds of meters behind the farm store building, hiding in the only tree cover he could find. It was his plan all along to lie in ambush, to kill the men hunting him. Now hearing the vehicles, he wondered if he’d made a mistake, maybe this wasn’t the best time and place. The bolt-action rifle was a sniper’s weapon, not really what he would want for an ambush, but he’d done more with less in the past.
Winston gripped the rifle by the handguard and climbed the rise, staying low so that he wouldn’t skyline himself against the morning sun to his back. He rested at the top of the hill and put his eye to the scope. The red truck was still exactly where he had left it. He scanned further to the west and spotted a black Toyota Land Cruiser, a dust cloud just beginning to settle around it.
“Shit,” he whispered to himself. “Why the hell are they way over there?”
If the vehicle didn’t move closer, he’d have to move himself to engage them. The last thing he wanted was to move into the exposed terrain of the field to his front.
He scanned right, and closer to him, between the building and the hill he was resting on, wended a narrow gravel road. He watched as a black Chevy Suburban and a white Ford cargo van turned off the hardball and onto the gravel, moving along a ridge. They followed the road until they were directly behind the building, then parked with their grills facing the farm store.
The ridge gave them some cover from the building, but not from Winston’s elevated position. He grinned, knowing this was the exact situation he’d hoped for; maybe his plan wasn’t going to shit. He looked at the distant Toyota. He hadn’t planned on a general on a hilltop to observe his activities. If he’d had a long-range 50-caliber rifle, he’d end them too. Winston frowned and focused back on the near vehicles. The men thought he was still inside.
Winston hadn’t been sure about the capabilities of the Apollo laptop, so before he left the building, he placed it on the small table in the farm store and took it out of airplane mode. It was a risk, but he wanted to know if these people had the tools to track him. If they found him, he wanted it to be on his terms.
